henry daly racing

HB Ltd are delighted to announce a new affiliation in the world of National Hunt racing. Following on from our sponsorship of three different jockeys over the past few years - Denis O’Regan, Nico de Boinville and Lucy Alexander - we are now backing the racing yard of Henry Daly, a friend and neighbour of Humphrey’s at Downton Hall in Shropshire. Having assisted the legendary Tim Forster for a number of years, Henry took over the yard in 1998 and has sent out over 600 winners from what must be one the most beautiful settings in the country, just outside Ludlow.

Equally important, Henry is responsible for Rapper, the 5 year old hurdler owned by Humphrey’s Home Farm partnership who has already carried the firm’s logo to victory last season. Hopes are high for further success for Rapper and indeed the whole stable as of September when the new season starts in earnest. Should anyone be interested in having a share in a horse with Henry, please do let us know. You would be in excellent hands.

The beginning of May saw our second trip to the shores of Lac Léman for GemGenève, a very new date in the international jewellery calendar, but one that has already asserted itself as an essential fixture. It was a great chance for us to catch up with some old friends and seek out some new treasures. The international appetite for high quality jewellery remains strong, with a real hunger for the unique, unusual and, as ever, for those jewels signed by the great 20th century makers (in particular Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels). We are pleased to report a number of successes in placing pieces into new overseas collections, including a magnificent Van Cleef bracelet from the 1940s and an important natural pearl necklace with impeccable British provenance. So, if you are thinking about selling, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. We are always happy to give a steer, whatever the value.

Our sights are now set on our next adventure when we will be packing our betting boots and heading to the rather less staid surroundings of Las Vegas and the Vegas Antique Jewellery and Watch Show running from the 30st May to the 3rd June.

As ever, the New Year finds us packing our shorts and sunglasses and heading for Florida for the annual Miami Beach Antique Jewellery Show. Despite some slightly overcast weather and a correspondingly subdued mood among the international dealing crowd, we’re pleased to report that we had great time. The show always offers us a chance to catch up with old friends from around the world and, crucially, to pick up one or two exciting new pieces to bring home. We’re particularly pleased with what we manged to unearth this year (in between some excellent suppers and lengthy trips to Macy’s department store) a selection of which can be found under ‘New Stock’ on the homepage. Our next adventure will be making our second appearance at GemGenève (www.gemgeneve.com) between the 9th and 12th of May. Last year’s inaugural show was a roaring success and we look forward to a re-run. If you happen to find yourself in Switzerland please do get in touch with us here for tickets, we would be delighted to see you.

It is with huge pride that we can report the first victory for our equine standard bearer Rapper (see News, October 30th 2018) on 17th January. A warm favourite, he was never out of the first two under the ice cool guidance of champion jockey Richard Johnson and finished a decisive winner of the 2m 5f Maiden Hurdle at Ludlow, his home track. Rapper was cheered home (with notable enthusiasm) by the entire Home Farm Partnership and hopefully this is the first of many triumphs to come!

BROCHURE 2018/19

FRONT COVER 2018-19.jpg

Another year! Our 2018 brochure has finally arrived. Once again, we’re very proud of this year’s stock and there should be something for all tastes (and budgets…). Existing clients will have a copy with them soon, but if you’re new to us (or suspect someone of hiding your copy…) you can view a pdf of the brochure here. Equally, if you’re the old fashioned sort and would like us to post you a hard copy please just get in touch and we’ll happily get one on its way to you.

Seen here in his immensely chic black and gold Humphrey Butler livery is our newest cheerleader, the four year old National Hunt horse 'Rapper'. After a very promising debut at Stratford last May (expertly piloted by Nico de Boinville, who we remain proud to have sponsored during his 2016-2017 season) where he finished third, Rapper ran an excellent comeback race at Worcester on 24th October, keeping himself bang in the firing line until the final 100 yards, finishing fourth beaten less than four lengths. We wish him, his trainer Henry Daly and his owners The Home Farm Partnership (manager: H Butler) the very best of luck and look forward to bringing news of his inevitable triumphs in due course!

May traditionally finds us packing our loupes and heading for the shores of Lake Geneva for the Spring jewellery auctions, but this year we were delighted to take part in the first ever Gem Genève gem and jewellery show as well - another date now firmly engraved in our annual fair calendar. You can see a photo of our stand above but, altogether more exciting, some of the great new pieces we got to come home with here

And, after Switzerland, Las Vegas! A great chance to catch up with all of our friends in the American trade before heading back out to New York in July. Steering Humphrey away from the tables we have, once again, found one or two little prizes including a glorious Burmese ruby and diamond cluster ring which you can see here.

Happy New Year! We would like to thank everyone for the overwhelmingly positive response to our latest brochure, which you can see here, and which rounds off an exciting 2017 for us. It has been a year of changes, the most significant of which has been the departure of Imogen Orr who has taken off to Florence to pursue her passion for painting. We will miss her enormously, but she has a great talent to nurture and we wish her all the very best with what will doubtless be a glittering artistic career. Taking her place, we welcome the lovely Hetty Stephen who will be in command of our social media and overseeing all repairs and workshop queries with great charm and efficiency.

Over the course of the year, we have had a number of successes in finding new homes for pieces at all levels, including a highly important Kashmir sapphire. 2018 promises to be an interesting year for the jewellery market, but prices for coloured stones and signed jewels remain particularly strong so if you have a piece you are unsure about, we would be delighted to give you a steer. We are always happy to take a look and offer our advice without the slightest obligation. As with the vendor of the sapphire (whose original estimate of value lay at a little less than a fifteenth of what we were finally able to return for it!) you may be pleasantly surprised.

We will be taking off to Miami in February for the great annual gathering of the world’s jewellery dealers. Hopefully we will be returning with one or two exciting new prizes. Keep an eye on our Instagram for updates and maybe one or two amusing shots of out-of-place Englishmen abroad!

We very much look forward to seeing some of you in Pall Mall over the coming year but, in the meantime, you can always get in touch with us here.

Humphrey Butler Ltd is excited to announce we will be sponsoring the renowned Stately Car Boot Sale at Sennowe Park, which takes place in just one month today in aid of the Norfolk Churches Trust.

Bargain hunters will be able to get their hands on a treasure chest of rare antiques and historical artefacts as the county’s grand houses once again clear out their attics for the return of the Stately Car Boot Sale held at Sennowe Park next month. Fine antiques and forgotten bygones will be on offer from around 150 stately sellers which have included Holkham Hall and Houghton Hall in previous years.

As well as buying items, visitors will be able to have their own pieces, and those they have just bought valued by auctioneers Cheffins. A silent auction will also take place throughout the day with top prizes including a drawing by Antony Gormley, a dinner in a stately home hosted by the owners, and a behind-the-scenes tour of Sandringham to name but a few. Bidding will start online well before the event.

Come and find us and our jewels in the VIP Tent, located on the Terrace at Sennowe, where drinks and canapes will be served.

Date: 30th April

Time: 10am - 3.30pm

Entrance: £5 (under 16's free)

Location: Sennowe Park, Norfolk, NR20 5PB

One of the most impressive pieces we have come across in the last year is this natural pearl and diamond tiara. It came to us through a European family who had been disappointed by auction house estimates both here and on the continent and we were more than happy to give it a new home. It was in need of some careful and sympathetic restoration, but the results have been wonderful. Mounted in silver and gold, each pearl-set strawberry-leaf motif is detachable, forming a handsome series of dress-clips. Fashioned by a continental workshop in the mid-19th century, a diamond-set headpiece of this scale is an important survival from a rather more dressy age. Click here for more details.

2016/2017 BROCHURE

Our 2016-17 Brochure has landed - just in time for Christmas. A PDF version is available to view online here, but if you would prefer a hard copy do just let us know and we’ll send one out to you right away. We’re particularly proud of our stock this year and the wonderful stormy skies that offset it. As ever, we hope that there’s something to fit every taste and budget as well as a look at our new FUR & CLAW collection, but if you can’t find exactly what you’re looking for we’re always happy to search for you, so please do get in touch. We look forward to hearing from you.

We would like to welcome you to the new Humphrey Butler website that will hopefully provide you with a relatively thorough insight into the business that was established in 2000 and has been wholly independent since 2008.

The site provides a full catalogue of all the current stock we have for sale and a library of pieces that have passed through our hands in recent years, together with a synopsis of the other services that we offer, ranging from privately negotiated sales, individual commissions and the repair and re-design of family jewellery through the various valuations that are frequently required: insurance, probate and family division.

The company aims to provide fair, independent and discreet advice to those clients who seek an alternative to the auction rooms with their labyrinthine fee structures. Our Pall Mall offices are open from 9:00am until 6:00pm Monday to Friday and we welcome visitors by appointment. Please do come and see us.
